My name is Daphne, I turned 70 just this year, which is something I can be grateful for. I am just a grandmother; I’m a pensioner. I really like the elderly, it is my friendship group. They are older than I am, although I am old.
I normally go every year to do a mammogram. From the time that I turned 60 I regularly went, every year. When I was 69, 68, I went for my mammogram. The day that I went for my mammogram and appointment with the gynae was the day that I saw I was bleeding. The doctors are very young, and I said to the doctor, “You know, you could be my son”. Would you believe, he had to examine me, and I was bleeding, but he said they are there, it’s their life, it is what they do after all. After that I went for my results and then the doctor said because I have a larger build they couldn’t see, so I had to go for the bigger X-rays and that’s where they saw something wasn’t right. Then it was the wait. What happened was that because it was December the doctors were going on leave. Then around 4 o’clock one morning I got up to go to the toilet and it was just blood. The Lord was so good, that I could stand up, go get the magnet off the fridge, go back to my room, pick up my phone and I called an ambulance, and I was in hospital for the day.
Reaction to Diagnosis
You know, you are scared, and you are so frightened, but on the other hand it looks like good news. You immediately become strong, you get that supernatural strength. You feel, let me just remove it, the operation will be the best thing.
Then a female doctor came to me and said, “We found out what the problem is, and remember we will do everything we can for you.” She said everything was on the right-hand side. She told me they are going to remove my ovaries and remove the uterus.
Family History of Cancer
Two sisters. Years ago, the one stayed in Middelburg. Middelburg isn’t that advanced, so she regularly went to the doctor and then she was told she should come to Pretoria, and they did the operation. But, being younger, I didn’t understand much so I thought it was just an operation, and you also don’t ask. Years went by, then it was my second sister and she also bled like that. She also bled, but she thought it was because she was getting older. Then one person gives advice like make a bit of turmeric water and drink it. Then she went to the doctor, but later the doctor told her she had to have her uterus removed. She was okay, until she developed dementia later. After she had her uterus removed she was very healthy. She never had the pain in her legs and her back that I experienced.
