Experience with Platinum Life
At that stage my husband had been retrenched and at some point I thought I should cancel everything that I could, but I was about to go visit my friend in Australia so I thought, “Well I can’t do anything now, I’m going there first.” I then found out about the lump and when I returned I realised there are quite a few expenses that the medical aid doesn’t cover.
I immediately enquired at Platinum Life and they were very good, they promptly sent through the forms. I filled them in, stating the diagnosis and I returned them with the necessary documentation. They paid out exceptionally quickly, which I’m sure was also because it was just before Christmas and everyone would be closing, and it really helped so much. I also had to move to the top plan on the medical aid because the others did not have enough oncology cover and also because Herceptin is so expensive, and even that wasn’t enough. The medical aid does however pay 80% if the limit is reached, but you have to pay 20%, and with expensive medication it really adds up, it doesn’t just came out of your back pocket. My husband started working again in the interim but the policy really helped greatly and it was a very positive experience.
They sent me a lovely goody box, just a little bit of spoiling that makes one feel good, with a kind letter enclosed and they phoned just to follow up on how I was. Then one day they phoned me and said, “We have a voucher for you from Pick n Pay,” which actually covered the value of all the premiums I had paid. All in all it was just a good experience.
